This past saturday I had the opportunity to volunteer and partake at the TEDxPortland. It was a spectacular event! An all-day event consist of 18 talks, 3 performances, Uncharted Territory–themed art exhibit/silent auction with proceeds going to support the Children's Healing Art Project (CHAP), breakfast, lunch, snacks, happy hour to a after-party at the PNCA! It was exhilariting seeing the energy and conversations ignited from the inspirational talks. Although my legs were giving up from the 18 hrs of standing but it was well worth it!

TED

Founded 25 years ago, TED (Technology/Entertainment/Design) is a nonprofit organization devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. The annual conference invites the world's leading thinkers and doers to speak for no more than 18 minutes. Their “talks” are then made available for free at TED.com.

TEDx

Established in 2009, in the spirit of ”ideas worth spreading,” TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TED.com videos, live speakers and performers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized. Over 1,400 TEDx events occur annually around the world.

Let's Get Brainy!

tanQ at OHSU's Brain Lecture Series: Jonah Lehrer (How Creativity Works) co-sponsored by our April NPO The Right Brain Initiative! Wonderful event and great seeing so many art organizations supporting 2012 Brain Awareness Season!

If you didn't know...

This month, tanQ is doing something brainy: we're working with The Right Brain Initiative to give local K-8 grade students access to the arts – regardless of where they live, their income or language. The Right Brain Initiative gives local teachers the tools they need to get kids excited about the creative process and helps them relate it to other subjects, such a science and math. The folks at Right Brain call it "whole brain learning." We call it "pretty dang smart."

Help support local arts education by buying a Right Brain tee today!

----------------------------------

If you missed the show, we recommend tuning into this 1-hour interview with Jonah from Think Out Loud on Oregon Public Broadcasting - OPB.

Jonah Lehrer is the author of Imagine: How Creativity Works, which takes a look at the neuroscience of how brains generate creative ideas. He jumps from the example of Bob Dylan writing "Like a Rolling Stone," to engineers designing Swiffer mops, and examines the similarities between both creative processes.

How do you express creativity in your daily life? Is it part of your work life? What questions do you have for Jonah Lehrer about creativity?

Thursday night was a crazy day for me! I was running tanQ errands around town like a headless chicken. Tried to get everything done and in place before I head to Vancouver BC with friends for New Years! Bummed that I missed my hot yoga class but at least everything was checked off my to-do list... relieved that I had some down time on the train to work on a 60 pg catalog freelance gig I just received. Not to mention... it's due in 7 days. Boo.

Inside The Tee: December Artist

Carousel3

December Featured Artist: Yas Imamura

Tell us about yourself.
I'm a designer and illustrator with a (healthy) obsession for old-timey nostalgic things. I like to tinker around and think-up the next fun project! I work from home running my own paper design studio called Quill & Fox. I've been married over a year now to my husband who also works from home for a studio in Seattle.

What formal training do you have in illustration/design?
None-- I've always enjoyed designing and doodle-ing things since I was young. I can almost rank that up as important as formal training as I don't think I'd be the same person I am now with that outlet! I went to art school for marketing, but I've ironically delved into more design and illustration things after school.

What is your concept behind the 'Pencil Personalities" graphic for December's good cause?
I wanted it to be fun, simple and unexpected. I really like the idea of showcasing all the creative things you can do with a pencil and pushing that idea further led me to the ideas of exploring all these different pencil personalities.

What are your biggest artistic influences and inspirations?
Other artists inspire me. I find heaps of inspiration online and in my local art community. There is always a ton of talented people in different places. I'm motivated by my passion for creating engaging art that people can truly appreciate. I'm inspired by the opportunity to share!

What is your favorite style of illustration/animation?
I love an illustration style that's imperfect and plays a lot towards design and composition than perfecting the right shapes. I 'm also a sucker for things that uses a lot of mixed-media. I don't always get to do that with what I do--but my attention is easily grabbed when I see someone do mixed-media really well. I think most especially in animation, it's such a fun thing to look at.

Can you describe your creative process - how you come up with ideas for a new drawing and how you take those ideas and create a finished piece of art.
I like to look around for inspiration. Most of the time I invest on a project is really spent on planning and research. I recently found this nifty trick of browsing through thumbnails of art or random pictures but having it at 20% size or anything small enough to be almost incoherent. It helps your brain to process things more differently or to see things you wouldn't normally see if you're actively looking at something at full view.

How do you keep your work fresh?
Do you need to consciously adapt your style or does it progress naturally?
Doing / seeing things unrelated to work or design keeps my work fresh (at least I think I hope so!) It's very important to step-back, unwind and declutter. It lodges off your brain from keeping at the same track it's been going. I think finding a style you really love doesn't mean you can't express it differently too. But we can get caught up with that one thing that "works" really great when there's a ton more other solutions you can think of. I'm always eager to try new things but I actually let my style progress naturally. I think adapting your style to a trend, especially if it's something you don't enjoy intrinsically can be a serious pitfall.

Do you have a favorite artist or an artist you admire?
I'd trade my arm for half of Henri Matisse's talent. I can only wish to use colors the way he does. There's way too many to really detail what inspires me for my projects. I find ways to be inspired by the most unexpected things like a soap label or a subtle detail on a blouse!

If you could be a character from a fantasy novel, movie or game, who would you be?
Hee. I think I can relate or assimilate to any character that's not overtly feminine, possibly with a similar short hair, and a wallflower. I'm not the heroine type! :)

Finally, what cartoons did you watch as a kid?
Madeline! Also Ren & Stimpy,  and a lot of the weird nickelodeon ones!

Where would you like your work to lead you? Have you any aspirations or plans for the future?
Right now I've been refocusing all my time and effort to pushing on Quill & Fox. I do a lot of freelance design work--but I think I'm ready to funnel in all my creative efforts to my design studio. A good aspiration for the future is to finally have my own store!

What advice would you give an aspiring illustrator/animator/designer? -In hindsight, would you have done anything differently?
I think the one best advice I could give is ---don't listen to anyone's advice and follow your gut! Heh. I think there's not much wrong you can do if you're sure that you're doing what you love. If I could do things differently--I'd spend the years I spent in college on just real life learnings instead. I think we are right now at the cusp of a society that really allows us to forge your own path. There is so much information we have at our finger tips (LITERALLY) that all we need to do is pick and choose the stuff you want to acquire and forge your own path.

Behind The Wonder Woman Tee

October Featured Artist: Emi Lenox
Carousel2
What formal training do you have in illustration/design?
I took art classes all four years in high school and took one term at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco.

What is your concept behind the ‘Wonder Woman’ graphic for October’s good cause?
I wanted to draw an iconic picture of Wonder Woman that shows power.

What are your biggest artistic influences and inspirations?
Craig Thompson, Chris Ware, Jeff Smith to name a few. They are all comic writers/artists whose work have inspired me for years.

What is your favorite style of illustration/animation?
I'm not sure. I like whimsical styles and cutsey styles. Color palette has a lot to do with what looks pleasing to the eye so sometimes it depends on that.

Can you describe your creative process - how you come up with ideas for a new drawing and how you take those ideas and create a finished piece of art.
I merely just think of what I really enjoy drawing and then work from there. Or other times I just vision a picture and work from there. I'm a simpleton in that department I guess.

How do you keep your work fresh? Do you need to consciously adapt your style or does it progress naturally?
I try to use different techniques in regards to colors. Sometimes I will try to mimic a certain cartoonist's style to see if there is anything new from there I can add to my own. Also, at the same time, I find that my style naturally progresses as my skill progresses.

Do you have a favorite artist or an artist you admire?
James Jean. He is amazing. I am a huge fan of his comic cover work.

If you could be a character from a fantasy novel, movie or game, who would you be?
Charlotte from Sex & the City. I realize it's not fantasy....but isn't it?

Finally, what cartoons did you watch as a kid?
Batman the Animated Series, Gargoyles, Rainbow Brite, Animaniacs, Tiny Toon Adventures, etc.

What advice would you give an aspiring illustrator/animator/designer? -In hindsight, would you have done anything differently?
Do work for yourself and not for the money.

Where would you like your work to lead you? Have you any aspirations or plans for the future?
I would like to be able to survive on comic work alone. Perhaps my own series or graphic novel other than my sketch diary comic.

Mucho thanks to our featured artist Emi Lenox for dedicating her time and talent to collaborate with tanQ for October's tee supporting Bradley Angle.

Wonder Woman is the classic all-American female icon: Brave, strong and a tireless defender of justice for all. This October, Wonder Woman joins with Bradley Angle in the fight against domestic violence. She believes that all people have the right to enjoy life free from the fear of violence and abuse, and tanQ is proud to join her as she champions this noble cause.
